One In The Morning

The green of the forest grows black with the night
As the sound at the river's edge washes from sight
Burdened by nothing, older and older
And shuffling my gravel scuffed shoes on the shoulder

Shielded from loneliness sorrow and danger
Exchanging the kindness of friends for a stranger
My back to the future, still turning away
By the side of the road at the end of the day

One in the morning and here linger I
Examining each single star in the sky
Don't even care if a car goes by
Hope against hope
